Week Ending April 29, 2016

Today was the first day of scheduled Kindergarten Screenings for our incoming Kindergarten students! There is nothing that compares to seeing the excitement and anticipation in the eyes of these young children as they approach the building! Some of them come with backpacks and pictures they have drawn and we absolutely love the opportunity to welcome them into Wawaloam School.

A special thank you to Mrs. Chris Petrarca, Mrs. Tammie Cash, Mrs. Pat Rheinberger, Ms. Sharon Callanan, Mrs. Lin Patty, Mrs. Olga Lerner and Ms. Kayla Caron for preparing for screening appointments and welcoming our new friends!

If you know of friends, neighbors, cousins etc. with children that may be eligible to register  (5 years old by September 1) but have not done so as of yet, please send them to Wawaloam School and let them know that now is the time!

This afternoon, we had the distinct pleasure of meeting with Rhode Island Commissioner of Education, Dr. Kenneth Wagner who visited Wawaloam School today.  He had a tour of our school, visited classrooms and talked with some teachers and parents. We were very happy that he came to see us and hope he will come back again soon!

Thank you to Jenn Spira, Tami Depietro, Christina Boudreau and Alicia Cranston for carving out  some time in their busy schedule for an afternoon to participate in an informal conversation about Rhode Island education.

Hope you all have a great weekend! Maybe I will see you at the Family Science Expo!

Respectfully,
Melissa Marino

P.S. Looking forward to seeing all of the teacher pictures on Monday!

A Message from Nurse Larkin

Due to the unexpected snow day on March, 21, the state mandated hearing screening by the staff at the RI School for the Deaf Hearing Center was rescheduled to today for our students at Wawaloam.
Mrs. Larkin, RN
Rhode Island Certified School Nurse-Teacher

Welcome students from URI

This spring four University of Rhode Island students will complete their health practicum in the kindergarten to grade two classrooms with Mrs. Breene and Mrs. Guglielmo.

Wawaloam welcomes graduate student Michail Seminario, senior Julianne Dulude, and juniors Brendan Spavold and Steven Ascola as they shadow, observe and assist during health education specials.

How do you get healthy?

Wawaloam students have created posters with their favorite healthy foods and fun ways they like to get moving to educate their families and community about the importance of a healthy heart! Healthy food options include water, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean meat. Move 60 minutes everyday in ways kids love like jumprope, soccer, swimming and dancing to build self-esteem and encourage positive social interactions.

16 kindergarten students, 34 grade one students and 20 grade two students have agreed to send their finished poster to the American Heart Association Get Healthy! contest. Thank you for teaching the community and your family to have a healthy heart! Good luck!

Mrs. Breene and Mrs. Guglielmo

We really appreciate all of the responses to our school improvement survey! The comments are especially helpful as we work together to improve our school. Thank you to everyone who sent these in!

Once we return to Wawaloam after the vacation week next week, the time really flies by! The weather improves and we are in the home stretch for the 15-16 school year. Please remember to continue the nightly routine of reading to or listening to your child read so that your child can reach their fullest potential.

However you decide to keep busy next week, enjoy your children!
Sincerely,
Melissa Marino
