Last Day of March! Wawaloam News

               WAWALOAM AND METCALF
        SCHOOL COMMITTEE PRESENTATION

On Tuesday night, students had a chance to share their learning with school committee members.

This is always so much fun and I am always so impressed by the confidence and the pride our students have in their work.

A very special thank you to Mrs. Scheff, Mrs. Corcoran, Mrs. Levett, Mrs. Fornuto and Mrs. Kilday for all of your behind the scenes efforts and taking the time required to make this happen!

Budget Flyer

On Monday, April 10th an all-day referendum will be held to approve the school district budget for the 2017- 2018 school year.

The E-WG School Committee approved budget is $31,733,320. This represents a 3.40% increase to the Operating Budget over the previous fiscal year. Based upon actual student population from each member town, the local contribution from West Greenwich will increase by 4.00%, and from Exeter by 2.37%.

The school department continues to experience significant reductions in State aid as a result of the RI School Funding Formula and reductions to regional transportation and group home aid. Additionally, the cost of employee health care has increased by $1.2 million, and we are required to open up new elementary classrooms at four different grade levels based upon enrollment.

Like you, we are very proud of our schools. The School Committee and Administration have worked together to develop, manage and maintain a responsible annual budget. We are accommodating a growing student population through reorganization within existing school facilities, while maintaining an excellent curriculum and programs. With the continued support of our valued communities, the School District will maintain its focus on academic distinction and student success.

Please, APPROVE THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE BUDGET! Where do I vote? Exeter voters vote at the Exeter Town Hall located at 675 Ten Rod Road, Exeter and West Greenwich voters vote at the West Greenwich Town Hall located at 280 Victory Highway, West Greenwich. The polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at both locations for your convenience.

Please bring canned goods & pasta to restock the food banks in both towns.

The following link will show you a thought-provoking, 3-minute commercial generated by Nature Valley but conveys a strong message about how important it is to ensure that this generation of students has time to play outside, create and explore. It is well worth the time to check it out, thank you to the teacher who shared this with me.

Spring Pictures

At Wawaloam, we are trying a different vendor for Spring pictures in response to feedback we received last year. Spring Pictures are optional and only those who return picture envelopes will have pictures taken. We are hoping to do these outside depending on the weather and we will be photographing a different grade each of the scheduled days.

Grade 2 Move to Metcalf
Mrs. Ratigan and I have just firmed up the days for the transition visits over to Metcalf for all of our Grade 1 and 2 students who will make up next year's Grade 2 and 3 students. We are working hard to make sure everyone is prepared and aware of this plan and are working in tandem every step of the way~

Lego Learning Kits

We are still having so much fun with our Lego Kits and love sharing what we are learning by using these in the classroom!

Toys at School
Please make sure your children are not bringing toys to school, this is our policy and your help enforcing this makes a HUGE difference! We end up with friends who are sad because they have lost or broken something special to them. If toys are out, they will be taken away and we will need you to come and pick them up.  Thank you so much for your help with this.

Have a great weekend to all of you!

BOOK FAIR RESCHEDULED TO MONDAY! Hi everyone. Due to school being closed, all afterschool activities are canceled as well. We have rescheduled all book fair activities that were happening today to Monday. We do not want any of the kids who haven't gotten a chance to come to the fair to be disappointed. All kids who were to visit the book fair today will be able to come to book fair on Monday. The classes that were scheduled today will have a chance on Monday morning as well as any students who were absent and missed their book fair day at school.
The Family BOOK FAIR Event for K-6 has also been re-scheduled for Monday night from 6-8pm at Metcalf School. Dave Marchetti and his animal exhibit has also been rescheduled for Monday night too~

REMINDER:  EARLY RELEASE DAY on Thursday 3/16   (2 hours early)

Feelin' Groovy

Once again grade 2 students will have the chance to participate in the Feelin' Groovy Bookmark Contest, encouraging students to design a bookmark to share emotions, identify their feelings and draw pictures expressing them. 2 lucky students will have their design selected from each school participating and it will be turned into a bookmark for our entire 2nd Grade class.

Students will hear about this in specials in the next week or two. They will need to bring back a signed permission slip for their design to be included in the contest.
